View NNW across Verulamium Roman theatre, St Albans, UK, first built c 155AD; later altered & enlarged it remained in use until 380-90. The modern pillar marks the rear of the stage which was given a backdrop of columns topped by an entablature (posts-and lintel) c AD200. The U-shaped orchestra (dance floor) area was entered by three passageways between earthen banks which supported timber seating. The unroofed theatre was surrounded by a high stone wall with external buttresses which was later enclosed by a new outer wall (foreground). The outer bank is spoil from archaeological excavations converted into a viewing platform. The theatre was built beside Watling Street, the major Roman road running from London in the SE to Chester (Deva) in the NW.
