The lowveld of South Africa: the coastal lowlands south of Grahamstown, eastern Cape

The Western and Eastern Cape feature a broad coastal strip, known as the Lowveld, in front of an escarpment of hills and tougher terrain in the interior. The coastal plain allowed Dutch trekboers 'wandering farmers' to move eastwards with relative ease from Cape Town. They first encountered the indigenous inhabitants of the Cape, the Khoisan or bushmen pastoralists and hunter-gatherers, whom they referred to as 'Hottentots', before contact and conflict in the late 18th century with the Xhosa people migrating south westwards into the Eastern Cape. The view features the coastal strip south of Grahamstown, where, in the distance, we see the Indian Ocean and the south coast of the African Continent beginning to turn northwards.
