Gravestone of “Peter the Wild Boy 1785”, near the porch of St Mary’s Church, Northchurch, Hertfordshire. Peter was found in the forest of Hertswold near Hanover in 1725 where King George I was hunting. He had been living wild in the forest and was believed to be about 12 years old. He was brought to England by Queen Caroline but proving to be unable to speak or receive any instruction he was placed in the care of Mrs Tichbourne, one of the Queens bedchamber women. He was given a pension and brought to live in a farm in the parish. He spent the rest of his life here. He would wander the fields and woods, once wandering as far as Norwich. He was fitted with a collar with his name and address with a request to whoever found him to return him. He died in 1785.
