As the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, the ruins of the temple complexes at Luxor stand within the modern city. The Avenue of the Sphinx connects the Temple of Luxor and the Temples at Karnak. It has been added to and modified by many pharaos but it is believed that in the ancient times, the avenue extended over a length of 3km and that there were about two thousand sphinxes.
