Buildings and construction methods at the Earthship Biotecture just outsde of Taos, New is the centre's main campus. The centre specialises in eco construction and self sufficient living. Many of its building materials are recycled or up cycled, for example old automobile tryes packed with earth are used for wall construction. The Earthship Academy runs courses to help people learn how to build their own homes. There is a visitors centre to introduce people to the project and homes can be rented to give guests a taste of the projects sustainable living and life style. The earthship concept began in the 1970s with architect Michael Reynolds.
