The Blue Fox is among at least 300 ancient properties in the city to retain traditional house signs or name plaques. The house at Na Kampě 498/1 is now occupied by the Embassy of the Republic of Estonia. The Infant or Child Jesus of Prague is a 16th century Roman Catholic wax-coated wooden statue of Jesus as a child holding a globus cruciger, the orb and cross which has been a symbol of Christian authority since the Middle Ages. According to legend, the statue once belonged to Saint Teresa of Avila, but it was donated to Prague’s White Carmelite friars in 1628 and is housed at their Church of Our Lady Victorious in Malá Strana, the city’s historic Lesser Town or Quarter The statue is venerated by pilgrims drawn from all over the world, especially during the Christmas season and on the first Sunday in May. It is routinely clothed by the Carmelite nuns in the sort of luxurious vestments shown in this painting, complete with imperial regalia and a golden crown. Kampa Island is divided from Malá Strana by the Čertovka or Devil’s Stream, a branch of the River Vltava.
