Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI Syn Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI Syn a synthetic bacterium genetically engineered

Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI Syn Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mycoplasma mycoides JCVI Syn a synthetic bacterium genetically engineered with the smallest genome (473 genes) of any self-replicating organism. Produced at the J. Craig Venter Institute in 2016, the organism was created using the synthesised chromosome of Mycoplasma mycoides transplanted into M. capricolum whose DNA had been removed. This streamlined bacterium enables scientists to study the basic constituents of life and the effects of adding new genes to the cell. Magnification: x45,500 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
