Desert features, artwork. Deserts are arid areas where little or no rain falls. The landscapes can vary from sand dunes (lower centre) to bare, rocky ground (across top). Small amounts of water may be found in oases (one at centre right). Ancient seas or seasonal lakes dry up to form salt pans (centre to centre right). Sudden storms can produce flash floods to form alluvial fans (base of cliffs). The large temperature changes and wind erosion slowly form features like arches and pinnacles. Canyons and layers (strata) are seen in the sandstone rock plateau (upper left). Deserts are inhospitable to life, and plants and animals have to be adapted to living in such conditions.
