In 1618 and 1776 the palace was so dama2:ed by firethat only four towers, parts of the basement, and the Sainte-Cha-pelle (p. 271) have survived. The Tour de VHorloge, at the , dating from 1298, is adorned with sculptures by GermainPilon, restored in 1852. Its clock, which has a fine dial, wasrenewed in 1370 and restored in 1585 and 1852, and is perhapsthe oldest public clock in France.
