Palaeolithic Gravettian culture. Illustration of a settlement of early Stone Age humans by a river. They are building structures from mammoth tusks and animal hides, tending fires and butchering dead animals. Stone tools are being used at lower centre, where Venus figurines (statuettes with female features) are being handled. This scene is based on fossils and artefacts recovered from La Gravette in the Dordogne region of France. The people identified with such sites are know as the Gravettian culture. They lived from 27,000 to 16,000 years ago.
