Thereis a mistaken use of ancient forms in thecarved flutings of the uppermost frieze,the strigil ornament taken from somesarcophagus; but this also may be con-doned in view of the fact that sculptor ashe was he dared not undertake architec-tural carving of would-be classical coupled pilasters of the upper storyare hardly classic ; in fact the pilaster inany form is a rarity in external architec-ture, so far as we know the buildings ofImperial Rome; and this feature wasdestined to be altogether characteristic of Arcliivolt:
