Mariner 5 spacecraft. Weight test being carried out on the Mariner 5 space probe (also called 'Mariner Venus 1967') at Cape Kennedy, Florida, USA, on 15 May 1967. This spacecraft carried experiments and sensors that were used to probe the atmosphere of Venus, and measure the radiation and magnetic fields around the planet. It was launched on 14 June 1967, and travelled past Venus on 19 October 1967. The results received helped to establish that Venus had a very hot surface and a dense atmosphere. The mission ended in November, with the spacecraft left to orbit the Sun in a heliocentric orbit.
