Whex the Scottish History Society was formed last year I waspreparing for the press an inedited account of Bisho}) Pocockestour in Sutherland, from a manuscript which I found in theLii)rarv of the British Museum. The Council of the Society, recognising in Dr. Pocockesjournal of his travels in Scotland an interesting contributionto our knowledge of the country during the eighteenth century,agreed to publish all the Scottish portion of the ms. under theauspices of the Society, and invited me to act as editor. Ifelt some misgivings in undertaking a work covering so widea field of Scottish topography, to which I could only devoteleisure hours at the close of a busy day.
