Directions for Using the GasVoltameter.— (1) Attach both clamps to the stand. (2)Attach one end of the rubber tube to theglass U tube and carefully clamp it by thelower clamp on to the stand. (3) Attachthe other end of the rubber tube to theburette and carefully clamp it by the upperclamp. (4) Adjust the position of bothclamps so that the* zero position of theburette is about one-half inch below thelevel of the top of the U tube. (5) Pour the acidulated water intothe mouth of the burette till the water in the U tube is about one-half inch from the top, the height of liquid in the burette should beon a level with or above the zero mark. (7) The waterlevel in the U tube and burette should now be the same, or furtheradjustment must be made to attain this result. The level in theburette does not necessarily have to correspond with the zero gradua-tion, but must not be below it. (8) Unclamp the burette and holdit nearly horizontal. The liquid will not run out if the corks aretight, so that this is the air leakage test. (9) Attach the connectorsarid wires from the source of E. M. F. (which should be 2 or morevolts) having a final switch in the circuit. In electrolyzing any substance a back or contrary E. M. set up in opposition to the decomposing current, due to thechemical affinity of the substances olis-unit
