I could onlyturn my horse with the greatest difficulty,and motioned to the driver to go did so; but exclaimed aloud, IsDost Mahomed dead, that there is no jus-tice ? This is a common phrase used bythe inhabitants of Kabul upon similar occa-sions. It is hardly possible to ride throughany part of Kabul without passing along abazaar, consisting of a double line of stallsor shops, in which goods are exposed forsale, and in which artificers work openly attheir different trades. The latitude of the city of Kabul is34° 23, nearly the same as that of Tripoli,Syria, Candia, Tunis, Madeira nearly,South Carolina, the centre of Japan, thesouth part of Corea, and the mouth of theRiver Hoangho. Its longitude is 69° 8,the same, or nearly, as that of Hyderabad,in Sinde; the Chagos Archipelago, in theIndian Ocean; and Kerguelens Land, moreto the south, with Tobolsk and Nova Zem-bla, on the north. The boiling point of water gave Kabulan elevation of about six thousand feetabove the sea. From the middle of July tothe middle of August, the thermometerstood at eighty degrees in my room.
