Recycling computer equipment. Fork-lift truck being used at a recycling centre for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). WEEE contains toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury, that must be disposed of safely. Other metals, such as gold and copper, can be resold at a profit when recovered on a large scale. This waste is being processed at the VALDELEC centre in Poitiers, France. VALDELEC, with four recycling centres around the country, was the largest such company in France in 2003. This centre specialises in television sets, computer equipment, electric meters, household batteries and telephones.
