Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. This gorge, a steep-sided ravine in the Great Rift Valley, is one of the most important anthropological sites in the world, earning it the nickname 'The Cradle of Mankind.' Since excavation began there in the 1950s, numerous specimens and artefacts have been uncovered, including early hominids (human-like primates) up to million years old, some of the oldest stone tool technologies, and evidence of campsites. Deep-running layers of volcanic ashes and stones allow the specimens to be accurately dated.
