A close-up side view of a male emerald damselfly (Lestes sponsa). The metallic green and powder blue emerald damselfly can be seen from June to September around ponds and lakes. Unlike some other damselflies, it holds its wings half-open when perched, hence known by the other name spreadwings'. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in July.
