View of the Morpeth Arms, Milbank, London,

The Morpeth Arms is a traditional Victorian London pub built in 1845 on the site of the original prison cells of Millbank penitentiary. Situated along historic Millbank in Westminster & rumoured to be haunted, we’re just 2 mins walk from Tate Britain, the Tate to Tate Ferry service & iconic Millbank Tower Underneath The Morpeth Arms is a corridor of holding cells which are rumoured to be haunted by the prisoners of Millbank. Prisoners of these cells spent the first 6 months of their sentence in solitary confinement, living in damp, filthy conditions. This led to an outbreak of scurvy and cholera. Prisoners were walked through the tunnels that join the cells and held at The Buttress before boarding the convict ships or floating prison hulks to Australia. Prisoners were deported to Australia until 1867. In total over 75 thousand convicts of petty crimes were transported to New South Wales and over 27 thousand to Tasmania. Convicts included Men, Women & Children. The Australian slang word for the English as 'POM'S' actually stands for Prisoners of Millbank.
