Blood pressure monitor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tiny blood pressure monitor implant on the head of a match. This device is designed to be implanted just under the skin in long-term intensive care patients, to provide a continuous measure of their blood pressure. Blood pressure is an important measure of the body's overall health. This device is novel in that it can be programmed and read from outside the body. Conventional implants have to be linked to computers by wires, which cause discomfort and can lead to infection. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size.
