Artificial spider silk, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Spider's silk is made of a protein polymer called fibroin. This protein was was produced by genetically modified bacteria and then spun into silk (white). The silk has then been spun onto a nylon (brown) to form a mesh. Magnification: x660 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
