THE KITTREDGE HOUSE On these same grounds was the first Kittredgemansion, and not far away were the slave quarters,significant of the fact that the owner of the oldhomestead was a man of means and also that heowned many slaves, as was customary in thosedays among the wealthier class in the old quarters have disappeared, andonly tradition hands down the many stories con-nected with their past. The immediate surroundings of the presentmansion are very much the same as when it waserected so many years ago. There have been someimprovements, however, since the time when thegreat housewarming took place, an importantevent in those days and attended by friends andneighbors for miles around. The dignified house is well proportioned, fit-ting picturesquely into its surroundings. Themain portion is square of build; in each corner amassive yet graceful] pilaster shows hand-carvingwonderfully fine in design. The windows haveretained the
