Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix officially surrenders his sword and himself to Julius Caesar.
In 52 , the Gauls, under Vercingetorix, made a valiant stand against the Romans under Julius Caesar at Alesia in central Gaul (present-day France). Caesar's siege resulted in the Gauls surrender and in this 1915 painting, Vercingetorix is pictured, as the accounts note, officially surrendering his sword and himself to Caesar.
