hotograph by David Coleman. The lookout at Wollomombi Falls offers a breathtaking vista of one of Australia's highest waterfalls, located within the rugged landscape of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park in north central New South Wales. Situated just off the scenic Waterfall Way route, this viewpoint provides visitors with a spectacular perspective of the falls and the surrounding wilderness. Wollomombi Falls plunges dramatically over the edge of the Great Escarpment, dropping approximately 220 meters (720 feet) into the depths of Wollomombi Gorge. The falls are formed where the Wollomombi River cascades over the escarpment, often joined by the nearby Chandler Falls when water flow is high, creating a dual waterfall system that is truly awe-inspiring. The lookout is strategically positioned to offer unobstructed views of the falls and the vast, forested gorge below. Visitors can observe the interplay of light and shadow across the rugged terrain, and during favorable conditions, witness the mist rising from the base of the falls. The viewing area is typically equipped with safety barriers and informative signage, providing both protection and educational context for visitors. Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, is known for its diverse ecosystems and dramatic landscapes. The park protects significant tracts of dry rainforest, river oak forests, and eucalypt woodlands, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna, including many rare and endangered species. The Wollomombi Falls lookout serves not only as a vantage point for the waterfall but also as a gateway to exploring the wider national park. Nearby walking tracks often allow visitors to experience different perspectives of the falls and gorge system, as well as opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.
