"Prince Yaroslav the Wise built the gate as the main gate of the city of Yaroslav and continued to serve as the main gate to the city for five centuries even after they were damaged in 1240 by Mongol invaders. They were modelled on Constantinoples Golden Gate. In 1982 they were rebuilt in the presumed original form."
