Pontenx-les-Forges, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: an ox and an ass greet the swaddled infant Jesus Christ as he lies in the manger of a Bethlehem stable with Mary and Joseph. This charming Nativity scene has survived on a sculpted stone capital supporting one of the three remaining Gothic arches of a medieval cloister now restored to stand in a pond fed by a waterfall to the south east of the village’s 15th century pilgrimage church, the Église Saint-Martin.
