View SE of ploughed chalk downland between Normanton Down (L) & Wilsford Down (rear R), one mile SW of Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England, UK. Excavation of a what was thought to be a Bronze Age pond barrow (Wilsford 33a) in the foreground revealed a cylindrical shaft 2m across & 30m deep. Containing deposits from the Bronze Age (c 1400BC), Iron Age & Romano-British periods which could be rubbish &/or religious offerings, debate continues as to whether it was a utilitarian well or a ritual shaft.
