Dwarf bowl-shaped Trees.—If the tree hasmade one seasons growth from the graft orbud, it may be planted in autumn; the extremi-ties of the shoots must be shortened a little, andit should be allowed to grow at full freedomtill next autumn, when it must be cut down towithin 9 inches of the ground. The tree, havingbeen a year established, will now be able toproduce vigorous shoots, three of which shouldbe selected, as in forming the head of a the summer, care should be taken thatthe three shoots make equal growths. Theymust be cut back at the winter pruning tobetween 6 and 9 inches in length, and thus, as 64 THE GARDENERS in the case of standards, six branches will be I branches. When this is done, each branch ought to be exactly 1 foot from thosenext to it; if any are wider apartthan that distance, let them bebrought to it. Whether a hoopor this contrivance be employed, the shoots, after being secured, should be shortened to a fewinches above the hoop or placewhere they are 1 foot apart, inorder that each of the sixbranches may be there sub-divided into two, making twelvein all. In shortening, where theleading branch is not intendedto be subdivided, observe to cutabove a bud pointing away fromthe centre, or in the directionthat the shoot forming a pro-longation of the branch is desiredto take. From the inclinationof the branches, and favoured bythe open space which they form, strong shoots from the uppersides of the inclined branches Fig. well-developed six-year-old pyramid Apple, after pruning. will be apt to Start in the middle originated. These should beallowed to grow freely duringthe summer,
