Report of the Board of officers appointed in pursuance of the act of Congress approved June 6, 1872, for the purpose of selecting a breech-system for the muskets and carbines of the military service, together with their report upon the subject of trowel-bayonets; . gainst the face of the cocking-piece. This al-lows the mainspring to impel it forward to the depth of its notch in thebreech-bolt and to drive the needle, which it holds, against the percussion-cap in the bottom of the cartridge. At the moment of the discharge, themiddle portion of the washer surrounding the rear stem of the needle-guide, being made of soft rubber, while the extremities are of hardermaterial, is laterally expressed against the walls of the chamber bythe longitudinal motion permitted to the guide, and by so closing themouth of chamber, prevents the escape of gas. A friction-roll in the cocking-piece allows it to move freely notwith-standing the downward pressure of the thumb in opening. Thearm using a self-consuming cartridge, the usual devices for extractionand ejection are dispensed with. Close to the firing-notch in thebreech-bolt is a shallower notch, into which, by turning the bolt to aproper point, the cocking-piece may be let down into a position of safety. m «. 27 PARTS PECULIAR AND ESSENTIAL TO THE SYSTEM.
