His watchfulness of the weather on theyacht and in camp contributed to the development of hismaturer keen enjoyment of the different aspects of the sky. In 1877 Charles kept the log altogether, and in that yearand often thereafter he was the captain on board, giving allorders concerning destination, navigation, and piloting. InSeptember, 1880, he was captain during a cruise from to Eastport and back to Boston, a cruise during whichhe encountered fogs, storms, the rushing tides of the Bay ofFundy, and heavy seas, but also enjoyed much fine cruise lasted about four weeks.
