Excavation of a prehistoric site. Archaeologist excavating the palaeolithic (Stone Age) archaeological site La Pineta, revealing animal bones and tools left behind by hominids (human ancestors). Here, the canine tooth of a hippopotamus is being unearthed using a brush. The oldest part of the site found so far (as of 2008) is believed to date back to 600,000 BP (before present), in the Pleistocene epoch. This is before modern man (Homo sapiens) existed. La Pineta is located near Isernia, in the Molise region of southern Italy.
