Finally,though not till 1877, this commission met at Halifax andagreed that the United States should pay to Great Britainthe sum of five million five hundred thousand dollars. Al-though the United States thought the amount exorbitant,yet it was paid and the principle of arbitration was An Indian Encampment on the Blackfoot Reservation. Here, then, as the results of a single treaty between theUnited States and Great Britain, we have three importantquestions settled by arbitration, and the verdict acceptedand the requirements met by the two governments. 425.
