In connexion with this it is noteworthy that abnormal growth of theskeleton with sexual precocity and early development of secondary sexualcharacters have been observed in young boys affected by pineal tumour;although this is by no means true for all cases in which such tumours havebeen found. In some in which secondary sexual characters were presentthere was an unusually large amount of the interstitial tissue in thetesticles, although these organs had otherwise remained small. On the other hand, it has been found (Dane and Berkeley,MCord) that the administration of pineal extract, both by feeding and bysubcutaneous injection, is also followed in young animals by precocioussexual development, particularly but not exclusively in males. The rate ofbody growth of the pineal-fed animals is also greater than that of thecontrols. The addition of even a small amount of gland substance to thefood is said to be sufficient to produce a marked result. Another condition which has been sometimes observed to accompanypineal tumours is un
