The crowd surged and I felt myself beingborne irresistibly along. There was a blare oftrumpets and people scattered out of thethoroughfare like autumn leaves caught upby a wintry wind. They seemed to swirlthemselves hither and thither as the mountedsoldiers came riding furiously by. These wereonly a prelude to the procession. By and by,down near the great drum tower, I coulddistinguish a cluster of floating banners, andwithin the banners
