On September S,18C3, at the very position inthese photographs, the garrisonrepelled a bold assault withmusketry fire alone, causingthe Federals severe loss. Theflag of the Confederacy floatedtriumphantly over the positionduring the whole of the longstruggle. Every effort of theFederals to reduce the crumb-ling ruins into submission wasunavailing. It stood the con-tinual bombardment of iron-clads until it was nothing buta mass of brickdust, but stillthe gallant garrison held SCENE OF THE NIGHT ATTACK ON SUMTER,SEPTEMBER 8, 1863 It is strange that despite theawful destruction the loss ofli\es within the fort was weeks the bombardment,assisted by the guns of thefleet, tore great chasms in theparapet. Fort Sumter neverfell, but was abandoned onlyon the approach of Shermansarmy. It had withstood con-tinuous efforts against it for.■;S7 days. From April, 18C3,til September of the same year,tile fortress was garrisoned bythe First South Carolina Artil-lery, enlisted as regulars.
