Star trails over HESS telescopes. Time-exposure image of stars forming light trails in the sky over the telescopes of the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in the Khomas region of Namibia. Star trails (here circling the northern and southern celestial poles) are created on long-exposure images by the Earth's rotation on its axis. Rotation around both celestial poles is seen from this location, which is within the tropics. The HESS is a system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) used to study cosmic gamma ray emissions. It began operations in 2012.
