Cadmus, Lester VanDerveer. 66 WASHINGTON ENGINE THIS Company was organized onOctober H , 1 795 by a numberof citizens, and started in asmall building on Burnet Street,which was used as the Thomas SmithCarpet Factory until a few years ago;later it moved to a building over LyleBrook, and in 1 859 moved to its presentquarters. For a long time the Company had noapparatus except buckets, and its firstengine was a hand engine which was de-stroyed in a great fire on the City Dockswhere the United States Rubber Com-pany building now stands, then anotherhand engine was gotten and this was de-stroyed in the fire of the Hyatt RubberFactory. In November, 1867, the firststeam engine ever used in the city was pur-chased for this Company and this was keptin use until 1902, when the present enginewas purchased from the American SteamEngine Company.
