A building worker using a soldering iron and blow torch to join sections of lead pipework before installing a bath. The work took place on a house in Kennel Lane, Fetcham, Leatherhead, Surrey, England, UK c. 1930. The pipework used at the time, for both water supply and waste, was commonly made of lead. Copper and galvanised steel became more widely used in the 1930s. More recently plastic has been used especially for waste pipework. Note the massive lead-soldered joints where pipes meet – a vintage 1920s/30s photograph.
