Bronze dragon memorial to Welsh troops who served in Belgium during the Great War

A new memorial was unveiled in Belgium in 2014 to commemorate the services of Welsh men and women during World War One. It follows years of work by campaigners who wanted a permanent dedication to the Welsh victims of the conflict. The bronze dragon stands near Ypres where soldiers from Wales fought on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. The winning design – made by Lee Odishow from Tenby – features a cromlech, formed by four Welsh Blue Pennant stones from the Craig yr Hesg quarry near Pontypridd, mounted by a bronze Welsh dragon. Soil gathered from the summits of Snowdon, Pen y Fan and the home of the poet Hedd Wyn, Yr Ysgwrn, was placed at the base of the memorial.
