Transit calculations of planetary distances. Illustration of the use of planetary transits and Moon-Sun angles to calculate distances in the solar system. Across top are illustrations and diagrams of the angle between the Sun and the Moon. Across bottom is an illustration of how the transit of an inner planet (such as Mercury or Venus) across the disc of the Sun, changes its relative position depending on where it is observed from on the Earth (a phenomenon known as parallax). Combining these observations allows the calculation of distances in the solar system.
