Baghdad, Iraq. This image was taken on 27th March 2003, during the attack by USA/UK-led forces. The thick smoke plumes covering much of the city here are thought to be from oil-filled trenches that were set alight to provide a smokescreen against aerial attacks. Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq, and stands on the Tigris river, which is seen meandering through the city. Image taken by the QuickBird satellite.
