The supporting medieval plinth of a 16th century roadside plague stone, Edenhall, Langwathby, Cumbria, UK
In the plague period of 1597-8, the inhabitants of a local area thought to have, or be at risk of the plague, would receive food in exchange for coins that had been disinfected in vinegar. The vinegar was held in a stone with a bowl shaped recess, hence the term plague stone.
