Zeppelin raids, World War I poster. Zeppelins, a German design of airship that flew commercially from 1910, were used mainly for reconnaissance during the First World War, but also for bombing raids. The first raid of the UK on the night of 19-20 January 1915, killed four people in Norfolk. The number of raids decreased as the war came to an end and air defences improved, but over 50 raids killed hundreds. This poster, titled 'The Zeppelin Raids: The Vow of Vengeance', was drawn in 1915 for 'The Daily Chronicle' by British artist Frank William Brangwyn (1867-1956), here Associate Member of the Royal Academy (ARA).
