Blue sky oblique view former World War 2 Warsaw Ghetto deportation SS Command building, 5/7 Stawki Street, Warsaw, Poland

This building, at 5/7 Stawki Street, during the World War 2 German Occupation of Warsaw, housed the command of the SS, which, during 1942-43, oversaw the deportation of the Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto to the Treblinka Extermination Camp. Across the road (left of shot), a building, currently housing The High School and Economics Schoo Number 1, acted as a Jewish hospital. In 1942, Jews were detained here before their deportation to the extermination camp at Treblinka. A memorial plaque, with inscriptions in Polish and Hebrew, reads: 'The school and temporary hospital building served the detention of Jews before deportation to Treblinka.' Imprisoned Jews from Hungary and Greece were releaed from this building by soldiers of the Home Army after a fight with SS troops at the start of the Warsaw Uprising 1 August 1944. The Umschlagplatz Monument, marking the place of deportation to the Treblinka Death Camp for the residents of the Warsaw Ghetto, stands near this building (behind the camera on the others side of the road). 5/7 Stawki Street, today, houses the Department of Psychology of Warsaw University.
