Flu virion protein assembly, artwork. Three types of flu membrane (surface) proteins are shown coming together here to form the coating for a new virion. The two main proteins are haemagglutinin (red) and neuramidase (orange). These are referred to by their initials when different strains of flu viruses are described, such as H1N1. The third protein structure here is the M2 ion channels (blue).
