Even so, in this typicalRaeburn, the play and interplay of the skilfullyaccented lights and shadows with the broader andmore fused surfaces of the flesh bring out toneswhich, though hardly existing on the canvas,complete the modelling, and, from the properstandpoint, convert the summary and seeminglyinadequate brushings into a living, breathingreality. This vivacity of-accent in the flesh, thoughit culminates in Lord Newton and in Mrs. JainesCampbell, characterises much of the painters bestwork, and is generally felt in proportion as hissubject admits of the treat-ment.
