They might have sold for the price of a cent, and were picked up casually by pilgrims walking through the bazaars in which they were made, but they were inventive and audacious, and spanned the distance between time-honored themes and contemporary happenings with astonishing ease. These two images display all of the freshness and charm typical of this school, and also portray two aspects of Devi with all of their necessary attributes. The figure of Saraswati, goddess of speech, music, and learning, is identifiable by her lute-like instrument, a vina, with which she is often depicted. Ganga's iconography is simplified in this rendering, but conveys all the essential characteristics present in the adjacent image from the Punjab Hills. It is interesting to compare both portraits of the river goddess, which would have been destined for very different patrons. 6 September 2011, 14:31:45.
