Evening sunlight on the 17th century ribbed dome of the Chiesa di San Domenico (Church of St Dominic) and the town of Stilo in Calabria, Italy.

Stilo, Calabria, Italy: The Chiesa di San Domenico (Church of St Dominic), known by the people of Stilo as the church of the Rosary. The church was originally part of a Dominican convent and built from the late 1600s to the 1800s on the site of a Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Agatha. Today, the only part remaining from the 17th century is the ribbed dome. In 1783, due to an earthquake, the convent collapsed to its foundations and the church was rebuilt. In 1927, the vault collapsed. It was finally fully restored in 1998. Stilo, built on a terraced hillside above the Stilaro river, was probably founded by former inhabitants of the ancient Greek colony of Kaulonia or Kaulon after their city on the Ionian coast was destroyed by Rome in 200 BC. It thrived as later generations of coastal dwellers sought inland safety from Saracen raids, and became an important Calabrian city that achieved autonomy under the Normans and maintained power and influence for hundreds of years.
