H., contributes anornamental specimen that is a free hand copyof something printed in Tbe Journal lastmonth. — tbe ahove,we have received duringthe past month an unusual number of oma-mentnl <lesigns of a character that wariantour noticing them. Two of the best are fromA. Philbrick, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. One re- vitha ground. The other a sprig of apple blossomswith a miniature portrait. —With a variety of other specimens. A. EDewlnirst sendsa skftch of a pair of crestedparrots that would make a pretty book Illus-tration. It is the best of the kindreceived, and we present it —The initial letters proper will have atten-tion next month as announced. Several havebeen received so far and it gives us an oppor-tunity of saying something that we might havesaid iwrhnixs to more advantage last month. Inproducing letters of this kind there aie certainreiiuirements which must be met. Generallysjieaking. the idea is to construct a letter thatwill allow tbe type to join on from the considerable intervening matter betweenthe letter proper and the type matter naturallypreeeulsan unbi-okcu and an awkward effect,so that the scheme of decoration should be forthe main part under or at the side of the let-ter, i«erh«ps a little over the top Auotherimportant consideration is the width of tbecolumn. The copy should be produced in snoba size that when engraved it would not be morethan I or IH inches at its greatest width. ToIk- sur, we have not alwajs followed that inmnking our letters but it is a safe rule to goby. Above
