Its impressive fortifications, visible in this image, include high stone walls, towers, and battlements that have protected the royal palace and former prison for nearly a millennium. The complex covers 18 acres and is surrounded by a now-dry moat. The White Tower, the oldest part of the fortress, stands at its center. Other notable structures include the Bloody Tower, Traitors' Gate, and the Jewel House, which holds the Crown Jewels. Throughout its history, the Tower has served as a royal residence, armory, treasury, menagerie, and the home of the Royal Mint. It's perhaps most infamous as a prison and execution site for figures like Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey. Today, the Tower of London is a major tourist attraction, maintained by Historic Royal Palaces. Yeoman Warders, nicknamed "Beefeaters," conduct tours and guard the fortress. The Tower's legendary ravens are said to protect both the Tower and the kingdom.
